Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta are a good pairing precisely because they’re so different — one is dense, loud, and fast, and the other is slow rivers and small towns. Six days gives you a real feel for both without rushing either.
Overview
Two days in Ho Chi Minh City to see the city itself, then four days moving through the Mekong Delta toward Can Tho and back, either by organised tour or independently by local bus and boat.
Day by day
Days 1–2, Ho Chi Minh City. The War Remnants Museum, the Cu Chi Tunnels as a half-day trip, and the old district around Ben Thanh Market. Traffic here takes some adjusting to — budget more time than you think for getting between places.
Day 3, into the Delta. Head to Ben Tre or My Tho as your first stop, both easy day trips from the city if you’re short on time, or the start of a longer route if you have the full six days.
Day 4, Can Tho. The largest city in the Delta and the base for the Cai Rang floating market, best visited early morning when it’s at its busiest.
Day 5, deeper into the Delta. Smaller towns and canals, ideally by a mix of small boat and bicycle rather than a bus tour — this is where the Delta actually feels different from the rest of Vietnam.
Day 6, back to Ho Chi Minh City. Return by bus or boat depending on your route, with time to spare before an evening flight if needed.
Independent or tour?
- Independent gives you more control over pace, but public boat and bus schedules in the Delta are less predictable than in the rest of Vietnam, and English is less commonly spoken away from Can Tho.
- A small-group tour covers the same route with local guides handling logistics, which is worth the cost for most travellers unless you speak some Vietnamese or have more time to work around delays.
What to expect
The Mekong Delta moves at a different speed than the rest of the country. Boats leave when they’re full rather than on a fixed schedule, meals happen on floating restaurants as often as on land, and the flat, green scenery is a deliberate contrast to Ho Chi Minh City’s density. It’s not a highlight-driven few days so much as a change of pace — plan it as the slow half of a trip that starts fast.
